My community (inspiral) discussed this last Sunday and decided that in a time when jobs are not only getting harder to come by, but are being lost or scaled back, we would try to create a job.

The idea is that we pool our stimulus package money (or as much of it as we are happy to give) and then ask people we know who have either lost their job due to the crisis or who never had one (eg. friends who are asylum seekers) to submit a proposal for a project that will benefit our community, and then pay them to spearhead that project.

We thought about just giving it away but most people we know who are unemployed are either bored out of their brain and itching to do something productive, or would prefer to earn such money (demonstrating the lie that is the myth of dole bludgers and asylum seekers sponging off the system).

It would be a temporary job, but would be a way of someone doing some ‘good work’ while they applied for others or were otherwise waiting.

I am the Senior Pastor of the Rowville Baptist Church in suburban Melbourne. Our area lacks social infrastructure so we are working through a long-term plan to develop our land in ways that will serve the community’s needs. Currently we are preparing to build a Counselling Centre. This will accommodate a range of counselling for individuals/couples, various groups/seminars and a foodbank. We are in the process of seeking incorporation of the welfare wing of the church to oversee a range of community services. We are encouraging people to donate what they receive from the Federal Government to support the construction of the counselling centre. By giving to this project, people can stimulate the economy through a building project and contribute to a community asset offering long-term benefits. We can give this money away without any impact on our lifestyle. So, it’s not sacrifical giving – just asserting our priorities. If anyone wants to donate to this cause, visit our website: http://www.rowvillebaptist.org.au and follow the links.

I have a friend who lives out of town, but occasionally comes into the city with her two children. One time when they visited, her son, who is 6, noticed a man holding a sign and he asked what it said. His mum read it out: ‘I’m homeless and can’t work due to illness. Please help.’ So he wanted to give the man some money.

Recently, my friend and her husband were discussing the stimulus money they would soon be receiving from the government, and what it might be spent on. Her son overheard and said, “Mum, we should give half of it to the bushfire people.” His parents wanted him to be able to do something personally, so they decided to take $100 of the money out of their account in five dollar notes so that their son has something to give and can choose who to give it to. We’ll see what happens!

Please see invite below sent out from the Jahwork Community in Doveton.
    Feel free to attend!
We wanted our action to create dialogue with people and to give the proceeds of the night to people we are in relationship with.
So many ideas are already flurrying round….

“The world is changing rapidly, with major crises such as climate change and the global financial meltdown in people’s minds. The need for action arises with realistic and practical ideas to help us continue a peaceful co-existence on Earth.

One of the biggest themes that has been on our minds lately is the 2009 Stimulus Package.

This week almost every Australian will receive $900, we are encouraged to spend it to build up the economy or is that our only option?

The members of Jahwork in Doveton have been discussing these themes and hope to create positive alternatives…

On Friday 24th April @ 7pm we invite you to JUBILEE NIGHT

@ 86 Doveton Av, Doveton, VIC, Australia

On Jubilee Night we will be sharing dinner and be invited to consider
re-directing a percentage of the stimulus money entrusted to us in 3 different directions

1.) To a local ‘alternative economy’ project in Doveton
2.) Towards our national brothers and sisters who are living in poverty e.g. Indigenous Australians
3.) Towards an international community who are experiencing a far greater crisis than our financial crisis

Please SMS if you’d like to come to 0418 146 601 so we can provide you with some great food!

Pace, Salam, Peace, Shalom! – Jahwork Community in Doveton

I’m spending my money on alleviating my Centrelink debt! It’s a personal ‘freeing’ for the future, so I can spend my money on more worthwhile things.

The world is changing rapidly, with major crises such as climate change and the global financial meltdown in people’s minds. The need for action arises with realistic and practical ideas to help us continue a peaceful co-existence on Earth.

This was the theme discussed in regards to the Stimulus Money we received in 2009.
Other things that we talked about on the night were:
    God’s Economy
The current state of our economy
    What is our role?
Talking about the possibility of an alternative economy is no easy task. Deliberating what to do with our stimulus money took the members of Jahwork some time. Here is what we came up with!

Jahwork would like to thank those that attended “Jubilee Night” on Friday 24th April
We ejoyed lotsa great food that continue to go round for everyone there and lots of thought provoking discussion!

We were able to set aside $1800 from the stimulus money we all received.
This will be split 3 ways.

1.) To a local ‘alternative economy’ project in Doveton
2.) Towards a national Indigenous initiative
3.) Towards a development project for women and youth in Nasir, South Sudan

If you attended on the night and would like more information about what was decided or would like to contribute financially to either of these initiatives please email anotherworldispossible@live.com.au
